NUSA DUA, Indonesia (AFP) - Miss Philippines was on Saturday crowned Miss World 2013 in a glittering finale on the Indonesian resort island of Bali amid tight security following weeks of hardline Muslim protests.
Megan Young beat five other finalists, including France and Brazil, to win the coveted title in a contest broadcast to more than 180 countries worldwide.
She thanked the judges for choosing her and promised to “be the best Miss World ever”.
The 23-year-old pledged to “just be myself in everything I do, to share what I know and to educate people”.

This year’s highly controversial pageant just made history after it installed the first-ever Filipina to win the coveted blue crown—bringing virtual chills and cheers online and in the rest of the Philippines, the country that she perfectly represented in the oldest surviving beauty pageant in the world.

The 23-year-old Filipino-American actress and TV host stunned the world as she presented the aura of a Miss World-in-the-making all throughout the pageant held in various parts of Indonesia. Ultimately, Megan's winning answer to the question on why she should win Miss World, "I treasure the core value of humanity and that guides her into understanding people, why they act the way that they do, how they're living their lives and I will use these core values in my understanding not only in helping others but to show other people how they can understand others, to help others so that as one, together, we shall help society," won over the answers of Miss Ghana Carranzar Naa Okailey Shooter who placed third in the competition and Miss France Marine Lorphelin who placed second.

Fearless forecast becomes reality

The Miss World organizers have shown early signs of picking the first Filipina titlist as they placed Megan in three of the five challenge events (formerly called fast track): first in the Top Model category, fourth in the Multimedia category, and fifth among the 11 finalists in the Beach Fashion Final.

While they no longer give the challenge events winners a sure spot in the final round, the winners have been awarded bonus points to their preliminary scores.

‘Curse broken’

The beauty queen goes down in history as the first-ever Filipina to win Miss World—breaking a popular urban legend that no Filipina will ever win the title.

The legend can be traced back in 1977 when Peachy Veneracion made the curse after she was forced to withdraw from the pageant at the time.

Since then, despite the Philippines successful finish in Miss Universe and other international beauty tilts, the Miss World crown has been elusive until 36 years later.

In 2011, the Philippines almost won the title when Gwendoline Ruais placed second to Ivian Sarcos of Venezuela. In 2012, Queneerich Rehman made it to the Top 15 while in 1993, Sharmaine "Ruffa" Gutierrez placed 2nd runner-up to Lisa Hanna of Jamaica.

    SINGAPORE (01 Sept. 2013), Ang Philippine Bayanihan Society in Singapore ay nagkaroon po ng panibagong proyekto ukol po sa mga nalalansa ng kalamidad lalo na sa bagyong "Maring at Habagat" na naging sanhi ng mga maraming kababayan natin sa Pilipinas na nawalan ng mga matitirahan. Ang mga official ng Filipino Community Center ng Singapore ay nanawagan po sa mga grupong pinoy lalo na sa Sigma Alpha Epsilon - Singapore Alumni Chapter upang tumulong sa paghahanda at pag-iimpaki ng mga relief goods upang itoy ipapamahagi para sa mga apektado nating mga kababayan ng bagyong "Mareng at Habagat". Masayang masaya po ang SAE Singapore Alumni Chapter dahil sa tiwala ng Philippine Embassy sa grupo at nagiging bahagi na naman ito sa mga  malawakang proyekto ng Philippine Embassy at itoy naging karagdagan na naging kasaysayan ng SAE sa Singapore at sa naging tulong ng bawat isa lalo't na sa mga apektadong mga kababayan ng kalamidad sa ating bansang Pilipinas.     SAE Singapore Alumni Chapter an utmost calling an assistant or joint effort from the other group of any Filipino Community and the Philippine Embassy in Singapore may have to be extended and be done to alleviate the present situation of brother Filipinos who were victimized by "MARENG & HABAGAT" disaster which was so disastrous killings so many lives damaging properties and putting the affected and less fortunate people in so much problems and hardships in life, We appeal to the Government Agencies and the other Filipino Group in any part of the world to do their and extra utmost help in terms of foods, medicine, clothing and most of all financial assistance to carry out and meet some of the important and needed expenses, either for relocation making the family in a safe and stable living condition and suggesting that government may have to do some applicable measures to prevent the occurrence of such tragic natural disaster. We wish and look forward that everything for the good of our Kababayans who are affected in the calamities.     The “JOURNEY” of SAE Singapore Alumni Chapter in INDONESIA

     During our trip to Batam, Indonesia. We spent our 2-days from Saturday to Sunday giving our time to a group of children at an orphanage place. This was the most wonderful time we've had in our life in Indonesia. The kids at this project unfortunately do not have homes and most do not even have parents, families, relatives and friends to go to. But despite their past, these kids have the most positive attitude that we have ever seen in a child. They are full of joy most of all descipline and wonder and of love. Our days were spent assisting some kids with homework giving their school supplies, or spent helping some with their English if they were interested, and of course we spent most of our time playing games with them at KFC located at the heart of Batam and nothing could make their day better than going to the park, or outside for a quick. During the moment with them we did develop a close bond to these kids and we sadly had to watch some of them leave this wonderful place they called home.

    From our experience with this project was a little bit emotionally hard from the relationships you develop with the kids and you're sad to see them go. But the reality is these kids couldn't have left any happier because of all the care and time we give them. SAE Singapore greatly missed the orphanage and the kids and the country itself! We are so happy and we do our part to share what we have and so very proud of the event we have done. The trip has changed and make a great history in our life especially in our group SAE Singapore Alumni Chapter and that we will never forget all those smiling faces that were a part of that.

    The Philippine Independence Day 2013

    Volunteers from SAE Sigma Alpha Epsilon Philippines-International and with the Filipino Community in Singapore who perform as " MARSHALL" during the PIDC 2013 celebration day at Hong Lim Park, Singapore. The SAE Singapore Alumni Chapter among the filipino group who participated all the activites in the Philippine Embassy in Singapore.
    The SAE Singapore are eagerly interested in the opportunities that may be available to volunteer at the celebration of Philippine Indepandence Day held in Singapore. We have many experienced working with other activities and it would be thrilled to continued to do so in a volunteer capacity. SAE officers and members perform the safety and security and to protect the Philippine Ambassador and the rest of the Philippine Officials especially the celebreties from ABS-CBN & GMA artist like Pokwang, Jhon Pratts, Rian Ramos & JJ.

    The Great Success of "SIGMA ALPHA EPSILON Fraternity-Philippines of  SAE Singapore Alumni Charity Program in INDONESIA.

    In Batam, INDONESIA saturday dated March 03, 2012. The 5-Gentlemen from SAE Singapore will be leaving for Batam in the preparation for the charity that was being scheduled by March 04 on the following day.The Gentlemen headed by Brod. Jhune Heso followed by Matt Sardua, Chester Abong, Rene Antonio Jr. and Domz Silvio and they are all incharged to buys some Goods, Foods, Kitchen Equipments, School Supplies and others. The 2nd batch will arrived next morning at the immigration exactly 900am March 04, 2012. We are lucky enough that we have a visitor from cebu who is willinglly to joined with us and he is  no other than Brod. Carlo of Xi Chapter Cebu City. The 2nd batch group headed by Brod. Victor Andales followed by Sis. Marife Gicole, Ronde Poloyapoy, Eric Manalungsung and Brod Carlo.






     At KFC dated March 04, 2012. The Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity - Philippines SAE Singapore Alumni are eagerly to joined their Lunchdate with the Orphaned Kids at Kentucky KFC in Batam.

    All of us have a thousand wishes in our daily lives. To be thinner, to be bigger, have more money & abundance in life, have a cool car, a day off, a new phone and a high tech gadgets, to date the person to whom of your dreams. However there are a lot handful of the misfortunate people and children around the world whom their only wishes is to live to and to see tomorrow or to see another days to come. Sometimes the beauty of life does not comes in seeing what we have but rather what we can give from our hearts.



    The Epsilonians in Singapore are working together driving a charity drive to collect some school supplies/stationary and clothing for the children in a local orphanage in Batam. Last year month of July & Sept., the Group are managed to discussed with the school principal and the staff regarding the distribution of the charity to help them of giving a little more to help the children to have a better learning environment.



    We would like to inform all Epsilonians in Singapore to refrain or spare your extra time and effort during the charity drive to be schedule around in Nov. 2011 or Jan. 2012 we will be collecting any form of stationary, foods stuff that you would like to give away or any children clothing. We are welcome to anybody from our friends and relatives for those who wanted to join our program.



    SAE Singapore would avoid any physical cash donation due to the nature sensitivity and trust. However, if there is any amount that you would like to chip in, we will be presenting you with a translated receipt, on where the money is spend on and a thank you letter from the principal of the school as proof. SAE Singapore will be leaving for Batam, Indonesia this coming JAN. 28 & 29, 2012 for the distribution of our materials. We hope to get as much support as we can from SAEsg in this drive.

    We hereby wish to thank you for your kind donation or any assistance in spreading the news around and hope that we can gather the necessary for the kids.

    The Philippines hits 6.8 scale Magnitude Earthquake

    Rescuers in the Philippines dug through rubble with shovels and their bare hands Tuesday after a powerful earthquake triggered landslides, collapsed homes and killed dozens of people.
    The 6.8-magnitude quake hit a narrow strait between the heavily populated islands of Negros and Cebu around lunchtime Monday with more than 200 aftershocks, some nearly as strong, causing further panic throughout the day.
    Local military chiefs said 43 people were confirmed killed, but officials warned the death toll may rise. Dozens of others are feared injured or missing with landslides having blocked roads for rescuers in mountainous areas.
    "Heavy equipment we've requested from the provincial government has not arrived yet, because the roads and bridges are impassable," said Senior Inspector Alvin Futalan, police chief of Guihulngan town on Negros that was among the most heavily damaged.
    "We are using our hands and shovels to search in the rubble," he told AFP.
    Thirty-nine people were reported killed in Guihulngan, a coastal city of 100,000 people flanked by mountains that was close to the quake's epicentre.
    The city's public market, court house and private homes in the area had collapsed or were damaged, while landslides buried some houses completely, according to Fatulan.
    He said the city's overwhelmed 42-man police rescue squad had been joined by hundreds of army troops and volunteers in clearing debris as they raced against time to find people still believed missing.
    "The army (troops) had to walk about 50 kilometres (30 miles) from the last stop reachable by vehicle to reach us," Fatulan said.
    Guihulngan is about 90 kilometres to the north of Dumaguete, the capital of Negros Oriental province that covers the southeastern edge of Negros where the worst impacts of the quake were felt.
    With rescuers still to reach remote hinterland communities, Negros Oriental governor Roel Degamo said he feared there could be more unreported casualties.
    "Sadly, we expect the death could still rise," Degamo told AFP.
    Degamo said telephone communications in some parts were also cut off, leaving information from remote regions unobtainable.
    He said the public was still in a state of shock and fearful of returning to their homes after dozens of aftershocks.
    "We've also had to stop our search efforts from time to time and run to safety because of the aftershocks," he said.
    Cebu, the Philippines' second biggest city with 2.3 million residents and a popular tourist destination, was 50 kilometres from the epicentre and shook violently during the initial tremor but no deaths were reported there.
    The Philippines sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" -- a belt around the Pacific Ocean where friction between shifting tectonic plates causes frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity.

    What to eat

    The Gustavian offers an ever-changing menu, with delicacies such as fillet of beef with their trademark pepper, morel and gorgonzola sauce, arguably the best in the Philippines.
    If you haven't heard of Larsian, then you haven't been around Cebu. One of the city's most prominent eateries, Larsian is located near Chong Hua Hospital and Fuente Osmeña, the latter of which is Cebu landmark, a fountain honouring one of the country's presidents, Sergio Osmeña Senioru.

    Larsian is all about barbecue. Offering everything from chicken and pork to seafood, ordering here means choosing your meal from the line of stalls along Larsian then watching your selection hit the grill. To truly experience Cebu through the eyes (and stomach) of a local, this is the place to be. It's opened from late afternoon till sunrise.

    Where to visit

    The world's first and only amusement ride of its kind, the Edge Coaster goes around the edge of the building while riders are locked onto a rail seat.
