To Travel in CEBU

The Travel Diary: Things to do in Cebu

LifestyleAsia
Besides the countless white sandy beaches and historical sites, Cebu is also the birth place of Christianity in Asia.
The oldest city in Philippines, Cebu boasts more than beautiful beaches, it also has a rich history that Cebu residents are extremely proud of. The "Queen City of the South" has come far from its simple trading port days, evolving into a metropolitan center and major Southeast Asian tourist draw.

Cebu's 167 islets have become one of the country's favourite tourist destinations, with people flocking to its white sand beaches and pristine waters. Cebu's strategic location also makes it ideal for travellers looking to island hop.

Where to stay

Radisson Blu Hotel is connected by a walkway to SM City Cebu mall, the 11th largest in the world.
Located on Serging Osmeña Boulevard and the corner of Juan Luna Avenue, Radisson Blu Hotel Cebu provides some magnificent views of the city and the Mactan Channel. Comprised of 400 rooms and suites, the hotel is equipped with all the modern necessities you could hope for including an iPod docking entertainment system with alarm clock, 37-inch LCD television with cable channels and complimentary high-speed, wireless Internet. All rooms also have the luxurious combination of a memory foam bed paired with down pillows and duvets.

What to eat

The Gustavian offers an ever-changing menu, with delicacies such as fillet of beef with their trademark pepper, morel and gorgonzola sauce, arguably the best in the Philippines.
If you haven't heard of Larsian, then you haven't been around Cebu. One of the city's most prominent eateries, Larsian is located near Chong Hua Hospital and Fuente Osmeña, the latter of which is Cebu landmark, a fountain honouring one of the country's presidents, Sergio Osmeña Senioru.

Larsian is all about barbecue. Offering everything from chicken and pork to seafood, ordering here means choosing your meal from the line of stalls along Larsian then watching your selection hit the grill. To truly experience Cebu through the eyes (and stomach) of a local, this is the place to be. It's opened from late afternoon till sunrise.

For something that's not quite as local, The Gustavian serves food that's inspired by Old World European cuisine, interpreted by the restaurant's culinary experts. The restaurant also has a British pub, The Tap Room, which serves imported beers, fine wines and local spirits for anyone looking for a relaxed atmosphere to relax in over a few drinks.

Regardless of if you're in the bar or restaurant proper, you can't go wrong ordering the fish and chips, gourmet cheese plate, sausages and curry chicken.

Where to visit

The world's first and only amusement ride of its kind, the Edge Coaster goes around the edge of the building while riders are locked onto a rail seat.
The Crown Regency Hotel and Towers is the tallest hotel tower in the Philippines, where tourists and locals alike can visit and have some one-of-a-kind activities in the Sky Experience Adventure (S.E.A).

From fine dining to absolute entertainment, the S.E.A features the world's first Edge Coaster and the country's first & only Sky Walk Extreme. There's also a 4D theatre and dining outlets such as the Club 36 Gentlemen's Bar and Sparkz Restobar.

Apart from that, there's the Vivo Gamezone where there's an unlimited access to a rainbow-coloured playroom for the younger ones, as well as the Sky Observatory with coin-operated telescopes and binoculars for a glimpse the city and nightscape.

Another place to take it all in while you're in Cebu -- minus the crowds and buzz - is Tops. Situated 2,000 feet above sea level on the hills of Busay, Tops is an excellent sight-seeing spot, offering some breath-taking views of Metro Cebu and the islands of Mactan and Olango.

World’s 16th largest economy by 2050

BusinessWorld
Posted on January 12, 2012 11:34:00 PM

“STRONG FUNDAMENTALS and powerful demographics” can propel the Philippines into becoming one of the top 30 economies in the world by 2050, global banking giant HSBC said.

The country is projected to be the 16th largest economy by 2050, a “striking rise” of 27 places from its current ranking, the bank said in “The World in 2050” report released yesterday.

The Philippines was also categorized as one of 26 “fast-growth” countries expected to register an average expansion of more than 5% per year.

“They share a very low level of development but have made great progress in improving fundamentals. As they open themselves to the technology available elsewhere, they should enjoy many years of ‘copy and paste’ growth ahead,” the report read.

HSBC’s “The World in 2050” aims to project the gross domestic product (GDP) growth of countries by assessing factors such as income per capita, rule of law, democracy, education and demographic change.

This is the second edition of the global survey, which has been expanded to 100 economies from last year’s pool of only 40. “A larger universe increases competition for the Top 30 and allows us to consider the ‘new emergers’ in the coming decades,” HSBC explained.

Emerging economies accounted for 19 of the top 30.

China was predicted to be the world’s largest economy by 2050, followed by the United States, India, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Mexico, France and Canada.

Taking the 11th to 20th places, respectively, were Italy, Turkey, South Korea, Spain, Russia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Australia, Argentina and Egypt.

Rounding up the top 30 were Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Netherlands, Poland, Peru, Iran, Colombia, Switzerland and lastly, Pakistan.

“This research strengthens the conclusions of the original report, which found that [the top economies] will be countries that are currently ‘emerging’. Our update shows that it is not just the likes of China and India that will be powering global growth over the next four decades. Countries as varied as Nigeria, Peru and the Philippines will also be playing a significant part,” HSBC said.

The survey, in particular, noted the Philippines’ progress in improving its economic infrastructure. Moreover, the fast-growing population is expected to increase the country’s labor force, which likewise benefits from the quantity and quality of education.

“There are some truly remarkable hot spots in Asia... The star performer, however, is the Philippines where the combination of strong fundamentals and powerful demographics gives rise to an average growth rate of 7% for the coming 40 years,” the report read.

HSBC projected that the country would have an average GDP growth of 8.4% from 2010 to 2020, 7.3% from 2020 to 2030, 6.6% from 2030 to 2040 and 5.8% from 2040 to 2050.  by Joeborgz

Singapore ranked 14th friendliest country in global survey

Singapore has been ranked 14th in a list of the world’s friendliest countries, according to a global survey of expatriates.

The HSBC Expat Explorer surveyed over 3,300 expatriates in over 100 countries. In the initial survey,
SingaporeHong Kong and the United Arab Emirates came in as the top three overall scorers.

What impressed expats living in each of these countries were improved career prospects and high incomes.

However, for the annual report by Forbes magazine on the friendliest countries, the magazine isolated the survey results to the ability and success in befriending locals, learning the native language, integrating with the local community and the assimilating into the new culture.

That's when it found Singapore fell short in helping expats to feel at home with the local community. Expats living in Singapore said that they tend to hang out with fellow expats and were more likely to send their children to international boarding schools.

So which country topped the list of 31 "friendliest" countries?

New Zealand scored the highest, with expats raving about the Kiwis’ friendliness and “pitch-in-and-help” mentality that helped expats to feel welcomed.

The country’s navigable government and good healthcare system were also draws to expats.

Australia came in second, with South Africa, Canada and the United States rounding up the top five.

The least friendliest country, according to the Forbes formula, was the United Arab Emirates.

Other notable entries were the Philippines who ranked 8th, and Malaysia, who came in at No. 10.

Of the Philippines, the report said, “This country is friendly on wallets, too: 47% report an increase in access to luxuries, including domestic staff, swimming pools, and owning properties.

On Malaysia, it said, “ Many expats here say they have learned the local language and befriended locals.

Said one respondent, “Malaysia is a peaceful country. Government transactions like tax, EPF [Employees Provident Fund], are very efficient. Food is relatively cheap. Also the country is clean and green and they respect the environment.”
